I found this dresser and antique knobs over the course of a year for very little expense, and refinished it to a golden yellow. Read the blog post.
A collaborative stop motion movie exploring what happens at night in the everyday person's shoe closet at night. The answer is opera, dance, and music! Art direction & production by Derek Larsen and Anastasia Tumanova. Music: live performance by Maria Callas of "La Habanera" (Georges Bizet). See the youtube comments.
A dreamy video about what it might look like to watch fireworks in complete dense fog. I was inspired by one of my favorite russian cartoons, hedgehog in the fog. My last name, Tumanova, literally means "foggy".
A foundation art assignment to demonstrate an ability to make the most out of a seemingly flat object like a flattened soda can, as well as mastery of colored pencil.
A narrative about my childhood memories of Russia.
An original embroidery series exploring fabric and ephemera to build characters. From left to right, Vladimir (the hipster Russian college student), Gerard (french cowboy), Michael (dandy sailor), Peter (little kid from the southwest), and Jonathan (military general).
A quick 3 minute sketch of a volumptuous female model drawn during my first year as an art student at Illinois Wesleyan University.
A detailed and colorful still life drawing of various fruit. My drawing instructor asked to look for the colors in the shadows, just as much as in the fruit.
I’ve always been a doodler. I made this one during a very long day my senior year in high school, and it evolved later at home into a crazy colorful drawing.
A "long take" is an uninterrupted shot in a film which lasts much longer than the conventional editing pace either of the film itself or of films in general, usually lasting several minutes (Wikipedia).
A portrait of my father, Alexander. He is a mathematician...
A painting I made when I was a junior in high school. This is a reinterpretation of a french painting made in the late 1800s of a can-can dancer reclining on a striped sofa, "feumer" a cigarette.
Zoomed in detail of another still life, this time with vegetables and dominantly colorful variatiants of squash.
A miniature of the Wire Cone Chair by the famous Danish furniture designer, Verner Panton.
A short video that reappropriates commercials by use of repetition and theatrical sound effects to create an outer space battle movie experience. We were required to create the entire video out of found footage and sound, as well as reappropriate its meaning. You can view other classmates' solutions to this project here. View commentary and critique at the time the video was submitted on you tube.
One of a few side projects of Camp Firebelly 2008. The team was brought into 3st, the studio of Rick Valicenti, and challenged to create a piece of design or art that came from an emotional response...to create something spontaneously, from the heart and mind, from the hands. It was a project that later on really helped me come up with creative ideas and concepts for my videos, and eventually my personal artist statement.
